Khartoum, Oct. 21 (SUNA) – The activities of the conference on the strategy of developing and upgrading the Judiciary during the transitional period kicked off at Al-Salam Hotel here today in the presence of Ms. Raja Nicola, Member of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC), representative of the TSC President, besides representatives of the United Nations Development Program, the Minister of Justice and the representative of the Attorney General.
Ms. Raja Nicola pointed out that realization of justice, which was one of the slogans of the glorious December revolution, represents the basis for any progress and the solid foundation for good governance.
The TSC Member noted that the achievements of our institutions and legal systems throughout its long history made the experience of Sudan a model for many friendly and brotherly countries, stressing the need to develop and upgrade the judiciary to meet the challenges, especially during the transitional period.
Ms. Nicola added that “the distinguished judicial bodies we aspire to require the development of a strategic plan that includes strengthening the independence and impartiality of the judiciary away from any influences.”
For his part, Supreme Court Judge and Head of the Training Department of the Judiciary Hon. Hisham Babiker Abdalla said that the conference came as a result of fruitful cooperation between the Training Department of the Judiciary and the United Nations Development Program, wishing that the discussion during the conference would be directed towards the values of justice.
For his part, the representative of the United Nations Development Program expressed his pleasure on the partnership with the judiciary in the framework of the democratic transition, of which justice is one of its main slogans, hoping that the discussion would lead to the development of a national plan that would lead the judicial work in the coming stage, stressing their support for all justice bodies to boost the rule of law.
The first session of the conference discussed working papers on the independence of the judiciary and enhancing the role of women in the Judiciary presented by Hon. Hisham Babiker and Appeals Court Judge Hon. Yahya Hashim respectively.
