Khartoum, June 12 (SUNA) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mariam Al-Saddiq Al-Mahdi, received Saturday the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, who is visiting Sudan at the head of a high-level delegation that included the Chairperson of the Political, Peace and Security Commission, Adiwi Bankouli, the Senior Adviser of the Chairperson of the Commission, Professor Mohamed El-Hassan Ould Labbad, and the Head of the African Union Liaison Office in Khartoum, Ambassador Mohamed Belaiche, and the official spokesperson of the Commission.
The meeting dealt with the developments in Sudan, where the Foreign Minister gave a briefing on the progress of the transition process in Sudan and thanked the African Union for its continuous support to the transitional period and its willingness to provide the necessary support to ensure the success of a smooth transition for a sustainable democratic rule.
The Chairperson of the Commission, Moussa Faki, has affirmed the importance of Sudan and the Commission’s keenness on stabilizing the situation in it to present a model for a successful transition to the democratic governance.
He praised the efforts of the transitional government in confronting challenges, especially economic ones, pointing in this regard to his participation in the Paris conference, which he described as successful in mobilizing and attracting support for the transitional period.
He affirmed the readiness of the African Union Commission to provide what is necessary for success of the transition process in Sudan.
The meeting touched on the importance of finding a comprehensive and satisfactory solution for all parties regarding the Renaissance Dam issue, where the Foreign Minister stressed that Sudan position is based on the importance of reaching a legal and binding agreement on the rules of the filling and operation of the dam because of their direct link to the important and vital interests of Sudan.
On his part, the Chairperson of the Commission referred to their readiness to provide any possible assistance to facilitate reaching an agreement between the parties.
