Khartoum, June 21 (SUNA) – The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mariam Al-Saddiq Al-Mahdi, received in her office Monday the Director of the Political Department at the Office of UN Assistant Secretary General, Graham Mitland, and the accompanying delegation and deliberated about the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) mission and the area of Abyei.
The minister has welcomed the delegation, praising the great role played being by UNISFA peacekeeping mission in the Abyei area, pointing to the efforts made by the government of Sudan to resolve the dispute on Abyei amicably with the sisterly State of South Sudan, by reactivating the role of the joint mechanisms for border control, the joint political security committee and the opening the crossings between the two countries.
The minister also renewed the call of Sudan government to replace the Ethiopian forces participating in UNISFA with other forces, given the current changes in the relations with Ethiopia and the loss of its forces’ neutrality, which is a prerequisite for completion of the mission’s tasks.
