Khartoum, July 28 (SUNA) – The Prime Minister met Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk, received Wednesday at the Secretariat General of the Council of Ministers, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Political Affairs and Peacekeeping Missions, Ms. Rosemary DiCarlo, and discussed the challenges facing the peaceful transition in Sudan and the implementation of the Juba peace agreement for Sudan.
Dr. Hamdouk indicated that there is a second phase within the peace plan related to returning the displaced and refugees to their villages, adding that the difficult economic situation the country is facing has increased the suffering of the citizens, a mater which requires urgent support and compensation for the citizens.
The Prime Minister said that Sudan is in the process for establishing the Electoral Commission and approving the Elections Law in order to succeed in achieving the democratic transition.
The meeting also dealt with regional challenges represented in the Renaissance Dam negotiations and explained Sudan initial position on the establishment of the Renaissance Dam, stressing that Sudan does not oppose the establishment of the dam, but sticks to its position rejecting Ethiopia’s unilateral, unthoughtful steps.
Hamdouk said that Sudan is looking forward to concluding a binding legal agreement before taking any step regarding the dam.
The meeting also touched on the crisis of the Tigray region and the border crisis between Sudan and Ethiopia.
The Prime Minister expressed his belief that the stability in the neighboring countries, including Eritrea and Ethiopia, especially the Tigray region, is very important to the stability of Sudan and the region, indicating that Sudan can play a pivotal role in realizing peace in Ethiopia, Eritrea and South Sudan.
On her part, the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs of the United Nations spoke of the full support of the United Nations to Sudan to achieve the democratic transition, explaining that the United Nations Environment Program will provide technical support regarding the Renaissance Dam.
The meeting also touched on the situation in Libya, as Rose-Marie spoke about the United Nations’ keenness on the disbarment and integration of the Sudanese militants returning from Libya.
She pointed to the desire of the United Nations to see more representation of women in the various power structures.
The UN Under-Secretary-General invited Prime Minister Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk to participate in the deliberations of the United Nations General Assembly in next September.
