Khartoum, Oct. 18 (SUNA) – The Ministry of Justice organized, in cooperation with the United Nations Development Program and the Office of the UN High Commission for Human Rights, a workshop on the Bill on the Act of the National Commission on Human Rights at Al Salam Hotel here today.
Legal counselor at the Ministry of Justice Hon. Omer Mohamed Ahmed Al Dhurair said that the workshop came to discuss the draft law of the National Commission on Human Rights, which is one of the commissions stipulated by the Constitutional Document.
He pointed out that the workshop is the second of its kind that was organized by the Ministry of Justice with the participation of big number of jurists from Khartoum and the various states of Sudan.
Meanwhile, human rights consultant Hon. Abdul-Salam Sayed Ahmed affirmed that the commission is concerned with the follow-up and implementation of human rights in the country, noting that Sudan has had a human rights commission since 2009, but this act aims at re-establishing the commission on new foundations in accordance with what is known as the International Paris Principles that stipulate the minimum principles to be followed in establishing independent national human rights commissions.
He has added that the commission is independent and concerned with human rights issues and monitors what the various government agencies are doing in implementing and protecting human rights, and seeks to protect individuals and groups from violations that occur from time to time and also works on legal reform to enhance human rights in the country.
