Khartoum, Sep. 29 (SUNA) – The President of World Bank Group, David Malpass, is due arrives in Khartoum today (Wednesday) evening on a two-day visit, which marks the first visit of Malpass to Sudan, and the first visit of a World Bank Group’s president to the country since decades.
The visit affirms the sincere commitment of the World Bank to help the Government of Sudan achieve better development results for the people of Sudan.
This is the first high-level visit by a World Bank official since Sudan reached the decision point for Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC), which is an important step that enables Sudan to liquidate all his external debts estimated at 50 billion dollars.
Malpass expressed his pleasure to re-engage with Sudan over the next year and to allocate about two billion dollars in grants to support the government’s efforts to reduce poverty, promote the economic growth and to reduce inequality, indicating that he is looking forward to promote the level of the World Bank’s partnership with Sudan government for enhancing the living conditions for the Sudanese people.
During his visit to Sudan, the President of the World Bank Group will meet with the Prime Minister, Dr. Abdalla Hamdouk, the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, Gen. Abdul-Fattah Al-Burhan, and the Minister of Finance, Dr. Jibril Ibrahim, to discuss additional ways to strengthen the relationship and aspects of the partnership between Sudan and the World Bank Group.
Malpass will also have the opportunity to assess the progress achieved in the projects supported by the World Bank in Sudan, including the Sudan Family Support Program (Thamarat).
