Khartoum, Sept. 16 (SUNA)- The UN Security Council yesterday called on Ethiopia, Egypt and the Sudan to resume the negotiations on the Renaissance Dam.
This came in Security Council Presidential Statement which was unanimously adopted by the council.
Following is text of the statement:-
“The Security Council,
Bearing in mind the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and the primary responsibility of the Security Council for the maintenance of international peace and security, and recalling the Council’s previous relevant resolutions and presidential statements.
Recalling the Agreement on Declaration of Principles on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project, concluded between Egypt, Ethiopia, and the Sudan on 23 March 2015,
Taking note of the negotiations that are undertaken on the question under the auspices of the African Union,
Encourages Egypt, Ethiopia and the Sudan to resume negotiations at the invitation of the Chairperson of the African Union to finalize expeditiously the text of mutually acceptable and binding agreement on the filling and operation of the dam, within a reasonable time frame.
Encourages observers that have been invited to attend the AU-led negotiations and any other observers that the three countries may consensually decide to jointly invite, to continue supporting the negotiations with a view to facilitating the resolution of outstanding technical and legal issues.
The Security Council calls on the three countries to take forward the AU-led negotiation process in a constructive and cooperative manner.
The Security Council affirms that this statement does not set out any principles or precedent in any other transboundary water disputes.”
