UNHCR Expresses Concern over Events at Jebel Moun and Kerenek
Genaina, Dec. 8 (SUNA) – The High Commissioner for Refugees – Darfur sector – has expressed its concern over the recent events that erupted in the areas of Jebel Moun and Kerenek.
The Country Director for the Darfur sector at the UNHCR, said that the UNHCR delegation, which arrived in Genaina, the capital of West Darfur State, held a meeting with the Wali (governor) of West Darfur State, Gen. Khamis Abdalla Abbakar, to discuss the humanitarian and security situation in the state.
The Country Director for the Darfur sector at the UNHCR called on the authorities in the state to work together to ensure the protection of civilians, stressing the readiness of the United Nations to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to the area toward improving the economic conditions and to ensure security and safety for United Nations staff.
He pointed to their endeavor to transform their emergency humanitarian activities in the future to development activities to help the displaced people and refugees and to support their voluntary return to their home areas, besides working to boost the goals of the constitutional declaration for the transitional period and to strengthen national plans to protect the civilians.
