UNITAMS Calls for Peaceful Solution to Sudan – Ethiopia Conflict

Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General and head of United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan ( UNITAMS), Volker Perthes, has called for reducing escalation and finding a peaceful solution to the border dispute between Sudan and Ethiopia.

He said in a press conference held, Wednesday in the Mission headquarters in Khartoum that he had constructive discussions with the representative of the African Union in Khartoum on cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union to achieve peace, noting that he would brief the African Peace and Security Council later this month.

He pointed out that the increasing complexity in geopolitical environment is another challenge to Sudan, specially the tension along the border with Ethiopia, sporadic clashes and hot rhetoric, as well as reports on the intensification of military operations in the border region, saying that “it is very worrying” and there is a grave risk here of miscalculation and escalation.

Volker asked the international community to adopt Sudan and Ethiopia commitment to a diplomatic solution to end the conflict in the border areas between the two countries, affirming his support for de-escalation and finding a peaceful solution to this conflict.
